Moheshkhali Island is located in the Moheshkhali Upazila of Cox’s Bazar District. This is not a very remote island and only require half an hour speed boat journey to reach the island. You can enjoy the small mangrove forest, sea beach and the Adinath temple on the summit of Mainak Hill. There is a community of Rakhine people and some Buddhist monastery. You may find many Hindus and Buddhist people are living here along with the Muslim communities since many years ago.

Key Attractions at Moheshkhali Island

  • Visit the Adinath temple on the summit of Mainak Hill. This is one of the oldest and largest Hindu temple in Bangladesh.  Hindu God, Shiva, who is worshiped as Adinath in this temple. This place is famous for the annual fair held at the foot of the Hill during the month of Phalgun (Bengali Calendar).
  • Visit Rakhine polli and learn their culture and living. They are living since many years and originated from the Rakhine states of Burma.
  • Travel all Buddhist monastery and know their culture. There are many Buddhist statue which shall definitely enrich your visit.
  • You must go to the hanging bridge which ends on the sea. You can capture some beautiful pictures during the sunset. While walking on the bridge you can see a small mangrove forest having lots of unique plants and trees.
  • Eat the Moheshkhali’s popular pan and supari (A green leaf with chestnut type seed) from the local shop but we strongly suggest you to avoid eating this if you have not eatten this previously.
  • You may buy a green coconut and enjoy the fresh soothing natural drink. This can be generally found at the top of Adinath temple.
  • You can buy homemade ethnic clothing from the local shops. Shutki (Dry sea fishes) is one of the most popular things to buy while traveling the island because this dry fishes are reasonably fresh.

How to Go?

In order to travel Moheshkhali Island, you must first go to Cox’s Bazar by air or Bus. Recently a railway road is being constructed which shall be inaugurated very soon or near to 2024. After reaching the Cox’s Bazar city, you have to rent a jeep or local auto rickshaw to reach the Moheshkhali going jetty. This jetty is around 10km from the Cox’s Bazar town and it may take around an hour to reach there.

Please remember that there are no road or walkway to reach the island so you have to travel by either speed boat, small fishing boats or local trallers (kind of boat to trip over the shallow sea coast). So after reaching the jetty, purchase the boat ticket and wait for them to a scheduled departure. It may take another hour or more to reach the island depending on the speed.

After reaching the Moheshkhali Island, you have to hire a rickshaw (Human driven two seated vehicle) because the island has a considerably large area.

  • While hiring rickshaws at Moheshkhali Island we suggest you to bargain with the rickshaw driver and should make clear deal about the duration of travel.
  • As the people in this area have distinct religious beliefs so you must honor their culture and beliefs.
  • Some areas may have photo capturing restriction so ask the local people or authority to know whether capturing photos are permitted or not.
